Public sector engineering consultancy firm Engineers India Ltd (EIL) plans to foray into the business of project management consultancy for the balance of plant packages for nuclear power projects, the company?s top official said.

Balance of plant packages include utilities like water, power, steam and telecom services for captive use and offsite work undertaken relating to implementation of projects. ?We have identified balance of plant packages for nuclear power projects as new area for our business portfolio,? AK Purwaha, EIL chairman, told FE.

?We are trying to leverage our expertise to provide supporting infrastructure for nuclear power projects,? he added. ?Nuclear generation in the country is currently less than 2% of total electricity generation and so it has to grow,? Purwaha said. As of now, India has 4,120 mw of installed capacity in nuclear power and another 3,380 mw is envisaged to be added during the current plan.

India’s capacity addition in nuclear power generation has been rather slow due to the sanctions imposed by developed countries on transfer of technology and export of uranium to it in the wake of the 1974 Pokhran nuclear explosion.Following the signing of the India-US nuclear deal, India plans to accelerate capacity addition in nuclear power generation.
