Corporators cutting across party lines on Friday united against MLC Bhai Jagtap?s suggestion to bifurcate the civic body, but did not miss the opportunity to attack each other in the general body meeting.
Shiv Sena corporators demanded Jagtap?s resignation. Group leader Sunil Prabhu said the demand was baseless. ?A similar demand was made by Kripashankar Singh a few years ago. Instead of trying to win civic elections, the Opposition in the civic body is indulging in futile demands.?
NCP?s Niyaz Vanu said the suggestion was not feasible as establishment cost would double. ?A new civic establishment would require new committees and departments. Today, 78 per cent of BMC income goes for establishment cost. If a separate division is made, it will double. What will be left for the common man??
BJP?s Yogesh Sagar said the Congress was looking to bifurcate the civic body instead of focusing on development. ?It has not won the civic poll for 15 years. …They are indulging in politics a year-and-a-half away from the next civic elections.?
Congress leader Rajhans Singh said it was Jagtap?s personal view, not backed by the party.
