The Punjab government would set up 40 centres of excellence in 2008 to meet the skill requirement of sectors such as information technology, manufacturing, and servicing etc.

While stating this, S Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, chief parliamentary secretary, technical education department added that 10 such centres of excellence had already been set up under the special scheme of director general education and training (DGE &T), Government of India.

Around 10 more centres will be established during the year. Also, the courses will focus on enhancing multiple skill on modular pattern with a multi entry exit provisions. Every year about 12,000 trained students with expertise will get employment in industries or start their own enterprises.
