The Ministry of Finance has discontinued the GST compensation cess on tobacco and related products, replacing it with a new Health Security and National Security Cess. This change aims to fund public health initiatives and national security. Demerit goods will now be taxed under a combination of the existing 40% GST slab and increased central excise duties.
