San Jose, California-based Prysm is helping enterprises define a new way of work. One where applications, content, video conferencing and the web can all be easily combined into a visual workspace where teams can create, edit and share. These interactive workspaces are stored in the cloud and available on any sized screen, says Amit Jain, president and CEO, Prysm. Before founding Prysm, Jain was CEO of

Bigbear Network and co-founder and CEO of Versatile Optical Networks, which was acquired by Vitesse Semiconductor. According to Jain, GE has chosen Prysm technology to spark team innovation and collaboration within the company. Prysm had launched its services in India last year, and since then has conducted about a dozen customer implementations across large enterprises, he tells Sudhir Chowdhary in a recent interaction. Excerpts:

How do you see the Indian market for a virtual workplace solution?

We have progressed many folds from the days of plain vanilla video conferencing to high-end conferencing solutions which are more collaborative and provide a richer experience to users. However, with the demand for anytime, anywhere connectivity increasing and a large number of employees working out of office, there is need for much more today. So the next wave of growth in the enterprise collaboration and employee productivity space will come from innovation of a different level altogether. This is where the concept of virtual workplace comes into the picture. It can help teams across the globe to create, share and save projects by combining apps, content, video and the web.

A recent Forrester Consulting study on behalf of Prysm called Digital, Disparate, and Disengaged, highlights that 83% of information workers feel the right collaboration tools can help them be productive regardless of location. Looking at the statistics, the global market for collaboration tools is expected to double by 2020 and India will be an important part of this growth.

In the last one year, what inroads have you made in the Indian market?

We have seen huge success in India since we have started our operations here in 2007. We offer two range of products—one is the display solution and the other is our software suite. Our display solution, laser phosphor display (LPD), is one of the most innovative ones and we have filed over 300 patents for the same.

Prysm Enterprise is the newest offering in our Visual Workplace portfolio. The solution integrates applications, content, video conferencing and the web into cloud-based visual workspaces where anyone can create, edit, share and store work, and then go back and re-access the saved workspaces from any location via the cloud.

Initially, we had Indian customers who primarily purchased our products in the US. Today, with evolution of technology and the understanding that customers possess here, we are able to gain businesses here and deliver directly. In fact, a few of our customers who implemented our solutions in India are also now customers in the US and Europe.

How is Prysm different from existing collaboration solutions?

Prysm Visual Workplace offers a unique and innovative environment enabling its users to access all of their content and data at the same time; while many traditional systems allow you to only bring up one piece of content for review at a time, when in a group setting.

Fundamentally, Prysm is able to unify face-to-face audio-visual collaboration along with the content from multiple sources and that is the differentiator for the company. We call ourselves a content driven visual collaboration platform, providing relevant data insights, and data is what is driving all the decisions across industries. Prysm can also integrate Cisco Telepresence and Microsoft Skype for Business into the Prysm visual workplace platform.

How does Prysm’s Laser Phosphor Display (LPD) technology work?

We invented a display technology called Laser Phosphor Display (LPD) which produces images and is customisable unlike other comparable technologies. It uses a patented laser engine and a phosphor panel to create breathtakingly beautiful images with low-power, solid-state lasers. To explain: In a typical boardroom today, there is a 25 seater table, with a projection screen or a VC input. If the chairman of the board or the head decision maker is sitting far away, he is unable to see or examine a spread sheet or an analytical graph or other integrities of the document. This is where Laser phosphor display becomes the best immersion and real life looking technology for a large canvas in a boardroom. You can, for instance, set up the entire wall as the Prysm video wall, or collaboration video wall, where you can display any type of content and can zoom-in zoom-out, just like the way you do on a smartphone or tablet.

What is the objective of your recent partnership with Microsoft?

We have recently announced an integration with Microsoft OneDrive for Business API and Office 365 making it even easier to work with Microsoft Corp. tools and applications. Using OneDrive for Business API from Microsoft, we have made it convenient for customers to connect Prysm Application Suite to their existing OneDrive for Business environments to make it a seamless experience for end users to access, search, and sync with content from OneDrive for Business and Prysm cloud. Within a Prysm Visual Workplace project, users may now access, work within and download content from Office 365 using Prysm’s built-in web capabilities.

These new integrations are in addition to the previously announced Microsoft Skype for Business integration, built using the Microsoft Software Developer Kit (SDK), which created an exceptional user experience for Skype users on large display walls, a first in the industry.

Are Indian companies eager to adopt such collaboration solutions?

I see tremendous opportunities in India because while the CEOs are still contemplating whether to go in this direction or not, they all are convinced about the visual workplace as an argument, whether it is global companies having footprint in India or the local companies who are aspiring to become global. They are all looking for leading edge technologies to leverage in terms of bringing in innovation between the diversity of talent that is scattered around the company.

What are the key growth verticals for your company?

Key sectors will be IT services, banking, financial services, and insurance, telecommunications, healthcare, education and public sector.
