Fijian American community leader of Indian descent, Pranita Venkatesh, has become the mayor of San Carlos city in California. Venkatesh was sworn in as the city’s mayor earlier this month following a unanimous vote by the City Council. She is also among the city’s first leaders of South Asian heritage and one of the youngest mayors of the city.
Her appointment also comes weeks before Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani takes office as New York City’s youngest and first Muslim Mayor.
Here’s all that we know about her –
Born in Fiji to Indian parents, Venkatesh moved to the US with her family at the age of four and was raised largely in California, The American Bazaar reported.
She was first elected to the San Carlos City Council in 2022 on an endorsement from the San Mateo Democratic Party and had previously served for three years on the city’s Economic Development Advisory Commission, where she focused on issues ranging from local economic growth to small business support, the outlet also reported.
Venkatesh holds a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University and a master’s degree in early childhood and clinical psychology.
Before fully entering public service, she worked as a child psychologist in East Palo Alto and also had experience in the private sector, including a role as a buyer at Macy’s.

Pranita’s campaign promises
Like Mamdani, who secured a landmark win in the NYC Mayoral polls, Pranita’s electoral campaigns were also centred around economic stability and social well-being.
“My priorities for San Carlos are public safety, childcare, economic stability, infrastructure, and affordable housing,” Venkatesh had told Scoot Scoop, a local news outlet.
The Fiji Trade Commission – North America noted her achievement as not only a personal success, but also a message about the capacity of diaspora communities to contribute meaningfully to American civic life.
The Hindu American Foundation also congratulated Venkatesh, calling her a proud voice for representation in civic leadership.
