The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement are keen on making an example out of and Indian citizen who has been arrested by local authorities at least six times in America. Just days ago, ICE Seattle announced that it had taken a man named Manjot Singh into custody in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations and the US Border Patrol.
The 25-year-old Indian national’s arrest was captured on camera and published on the official ICE Seattle X page on July 23 (IST). Yesterday, ICE officials pushed the same video on social media again via its official Instagram handle ‘icegov.’
In both posts, authorities established that Manjot Singh has a criminal history that included robbery, theft, criminal impersonation and DUI. Last week, immigration officials revealed that the citizen of India would be staying in ICE custody until his removal proceedings are concluded. On the other side, their Instagram post declared, “Now that he’s in our custody. Manjot should expect to be deported.”
Manjot Singh’s arrest, another example of Trump’s immigration crackdown
Singh’s arrest comes as no surprise as the Donald Trump administration continues to double down on its immigration crackdown. Official social media handles of the US Embassy in India, US State Department, Homeland Security, ICE, Customs and Border Protection and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services have repeatedly issued fresh warning for US visa holders. In addition to calling out people overstaying their visa, officials have increasingly targeted nonimmigrants and even green card holders for their perceived past criminal record.
Earlier this month, an Indian woman was nabbed for shoplifting items worth about $1,300 at a Target store in the US. Shortly after the video of her arrest at the retail store went viral on social media, the US Embassy India page on X again released the same statement US officials have long been reiterating about visa revocation and deportation.
US repeatedly warns visa holders
“Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won’t just cause you legal issues,” the officials tweeted. “It could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future US visas. The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all US laws.”
Just last week, the US Embassy in India shared yet another warning along the same lines. “The United States is a society of law and order. Crimes like assault by foreign visitors will not be tolerated. If you break the law in the United States, your US visa can be revoked, and you may be ineligible to return to the United States — FOR LIFE,” said the July 26 X post.
Beyond ICE sounding the alarm on Manjot Singh’s case, US authorities are still seeking to arrest an American woman named Cindy Rodriguez Singh, who is believed to have fled to India after allegedly killing her 6-year-old son. Labelled a “flight risk,” she made it to the ‘FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitive’ list. The American intelligence service is even offering a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to her arrest.
