FIFA Club World Cup: The FIFA Club World Cup final took a rather surprising turn when US President Donald Trump claimed that he had the “real” FIFA Club World Cup Trophy. It was gifted to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in March.

“They said, ‘Could you hold this trophy for a little while?’ We put it in the Oval Office,” Trump recalled in a press conference.

“And then I said, ‘When are you going to pick up the trophy?’ He says, ‘We’re never going to pick it up. You can have it forever in the Oval Office. We’re making a new one.’ “And they actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting … it’s in the Oval right now.”

Trump’s viral ‘awkward’ trophy lift

Leaving fans and winners baffled, Trump awkwardly stood in the middle of the winners’ podium during the trophy presentation. He shared the stage with players like Cole Palmer, Player of the Match. He shared a visibly uncomfortable glance with Captain Reece James as he reportedly asked, “Why is Trump here?”. Palmer, on the other hand, appeared confused and even said, “What’s he doing?” which led the Chelsea captain to ask, “Are you going to leave?”.

“I knew he was going to be here,” Palmer later clarified, “but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused.”

Soccer or football?

In another bizarre moment, Trump quipped about signing an executive order that could mandate ‘soccer’ be called ‘football’. He remarked to DAZN, “I think we could do that” after he attended the FIFA final, which ended in an upset with Chelsea FC defeating Paris Saint-Germain FC.

In attendance were the who’s who of the US administration like Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Chief Kristy Noem. The iconic half-time performance had a surprise cameo performance with British rock band Coldplay alongside J Balvin, Doja Cat, Tems, and Emmanuel Kelly.

‘Such an embarrassment’: Netizens react

Netizens, fans and supporters could not get over Trump’s awkward exchange with Chelsea on the podium. “Such an embarrassment,” said a user sharing the video.
“He always needs to be the center of attention,” wrote a user as he said that Trump hijacked the trophy presentation for the winners.

“Trump holding Chelsea’s World Cup trophy in the Oval Office is peak delusion,” opined a user when he shared that FIFA “left” the trophy in the Oval Office.”Even in sports, he pretends to win what isn’t his,” the netizen added. On the other hand, supporters even praised him for his presence and his dedication to appreciating sport and “his love for the USA.” Others found it hard to believe and called it a “parody”.
