A medical helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento, California, critically injured at least three people on Monday night (US time), as per the Sacramento Fire Department. Sacramento City Councilmember Lisa Kaplan eventually posted a picture of the crowded highway following the announcement that it had been closed in both directions.

Officials have since confirmed that it was a REACH medical helicopter, according to the Daily Mail. Sacramento Fire’s Captain Justin Sylvia also revealed that all three – pilot, nurse and paramedic – crew members on the helicopter had been taken to the hospital. No patient was on board.

Of these, two were found on the roadway, and the third was stuck under the wreckage. As per California Highway Patrol logs, the crash took place just after 7 pm on eastbound Highway 50. No other accidents involving other vehicles were reported.

However, a Sacramento resident who was headed home from work at the time, came within feet of the helicopter, which plummeted onto the highway. Davi Bychkoviak subsequently told the Daily Mail that he had spotted the aircraft flying close to the ground right before it crashed.

“Then just literally, a couple of seconds after, the crash happened, literally five feet next to me,” he recounted the tragic fall. “It was pretty scary. There was no explosion, it was just loud and there was smoke everywhere.”

According to a flight tracker, the Airbus H-130 helicopter had taken off from the roof of UC Davis Medical Centre merely minutes before it crashed.
