Modi had earlier praised the efforts of Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the conflict and secure the release of hostages in Gaza.
In a social media post tagging both leaders, Modi stated, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This also reflects the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu.”
On Wednesday, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of the plan, which includes a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.
This is part of the US-backed 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza, following negotiations in Cairo involving officials from the US, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar.
In the first phase of the plan, the release of hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces to a predetermined line are set to take place.
Hamas is expected to release all living Israeli hostages, believed to number around 20, with the process scheduled to begin on Monday. Currently, an estimated 48 Israeli hostages remain captive in Gaza.
Out of the 251 hostages taken into Gaza by Hamas two years ago, 148 have been freed either through previous ceasefire agreements or rescued by Israeli forces, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The bodies of another 57 hostages have been returned or recovered.
