The US State Department has now confirmed that over 95,000 visas have been revoked so far this year. The massive shift comes under the Donald Trump administration, with State Secretary Marco Rubio leading the charge, repeatedly reminding foreign nationals that a US visa is a privilege, not a right.
The government department confirmed the big development to Fox News on Friday (US time). The pace of all visa revocations in the US has particularly emerged as a deterrent for others who may have viewed America as their goal. the numbers are especially startling, as the numbers previously reported just this month were at the 85,000-mark.

As per Fox News Digital’s previous report, thousands of these US visa revoked under the Trump administration also majorly constitute student visas. The American news outlet had previously revealed that more than 8,000 visas belonging to international students have been revoked thus far.

Policy changes, Visa and immigration overhaul
Nonimmigrant workers and foreign students have been severely hit ever since Donald Trump stepped back into the presidential office in January 2025. On top of that, the POTUS has especially hit hard against highly skilled workers coming into the US through the H-1B visa program.
In a September proclamation, he announced that new H-1B petitions would charge an additional $100,000 fee. The decision has since significantly impacted the Silicon Valley and some of the biggest companies in the country, like Google, Amazon, Apple, Walmart and Meta, that predominantly rely on an H-1B workforce.
Thereafter, ‘Project Firewall’ was also introduced as part of the initiative to curb what the administration deems to be H-1B “fraud,” “scam,” or “abuse,” claiming that the nonimmigrant visa program has hit hard against American workers, who are being replaced by cheap and foreign labour.
On top of that, recent fatal shooting incidents in the US also fuelled Trump’s immigration crackdown. The POTUS has since issued explosive declarations targeting “third world countries,” blocking immigration request for Afghan citizens and whatnot. His travel ban proclamation, originally issued in June, has also expanded to include 20 more countries.
In the latest move targeting foreign nationals, he also directed that the Green Card lottery, aka the Diversity Visa Program, be scrapped as well. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem posted a firm response regarding the same on her official X account, revealing that the suspect behind the recent Brown University shooting and MIT professor’s killing was a Portuguese man who came to the US through the Green Card lottery.
