New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s transition team was swarmed with 50,000 job applications within a week of him declaring a resounding victory in the mayoral elections.

Mamdani’s team has sought applications of “all experience levels,” ranging from entry-level workers to seasoned policy professionals who are “looking to build their careers while helping deliver on the affordability agenda”. They invited job applications via the resume portal at transition2025.com.

New Yorkers trust our administration: Mamdani

Reacting to the inflow of applications, Mamdani called it a “movement built by New Yorkers”, adding that it reflects citizens’ confidence in the administration.

“50,000 applicants are proving that [people are] ready to help carry out this work across all levels of government,” Elana Leopold, executive director of Mamdani’s transition team said in a written statement.

It is, however, not immediately clear when Mamdani’s administration will begin to fill the positions.

Mamdani’s transition team continues to raise money

Mamdani’s transition committee announced that it had already raised $517,947 from more than 7,000 donors in less than 30 hours, surpassing the donor totals of former mayors Eric Adams (884 donors) and Bill de Blasio (820), combined, USA Today reported.

Deemed a commoner’s hero, New York City’s youngest and first Muslim mayor Mamdani was propelled to victory largely by the support of younger voters eager for affordable living.

His electoral policies strongly focussed on freezing rents for stabilised apartments and expanding social benefits such as free bus rides and bringing New Yorkers under the ambit of universal healthcare.

Mamdani, who defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, will be sworn in as mayor on January 1, 2026 at the Gracie Mansion, which is the official residence of New York City mayors, overlooking the East River.
