Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are planning swift inquiries into how an individual managed to bypass Secret Service agents and ascend to the roof of a building near a rally where former President Donald Trump was speaking, firing multiple shots before being fatally shot themselves.
Mike Johnson, the speaker of the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives, announced that committees within the chamber will summon officials from the Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI for hearings in the near future.
The House oversight panel has scheduled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify on July 22.
Details about the incident remain limited, but initial media reports indicate the shooter was located beyond the security perimeter of the rally venue in Butler, Pennsylvania. Following the incident, criticism targeted the Secret Service, tasked with safeguarding Trump who is a former president. Entrepreneur Elon Musk demanded the resignation of the agency’s leadership.
