US President Donald Trump on Sunday said that US officials had “very good” discussions with an Iranian delegation over the weekend. Trump is aiming for an agreement that would stop Tehran from building a nuclear weapon, reported Reuters.
“I think we could have some good news on the Iran front,” Trump told the media at the Morristown airport in New Jersey. He mentioned that there had been real progress, but didn’t give details about the talks in Rome between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Iranian team.
“I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good,” he said.
The United States and Iran held discussions last week in Rome, where Iran‘s foreign minister and chief negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, expressed hope that an agreement could be reached within the next few meetings. Araghchi, speaking to state television, described the recent discussions as highly professional. He said that Iran’s stance was clearly communicated and said that simply being on a more reasonable and constructive path was a sign of progress.
During his first term, Trump had pulled the US out of the agreement made under the Obama administration. However, he has since taken steps aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear activities and avoiding conflict.
Trump on Sunday said that he strongly supported the idea of a peaceful resolution, adding that avoiding violence and loss of life would be a positive outcome. He said there was a strong possibility that a deal could be achieved.
Trump’s remarks, along with the more hopeful atmosphere at the end of the Rome talks, may help calm the oil market. A CNN report had earlier suggested that Israel was preparing for a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
