US President Donald Trump in his joint address to the Congress on Tuesday vowed to kick-in reciprocal tariffs against India and China from April 2, 2025. Trump mentioned that “India and other are charging US huge tariffs” and added that this was part of his plan to make “America great again.” Trump said that he wanted to bring in the reciprocal tariffs from April 1 but didn’t want to be “accused of April Fool’s Day.”
Addressing the Congress, Trump pointed out that other countries have imposed tariffs on the US for many years, and now it was time for the US to use tariffs against those countries. He said that countries like the European Union, China, Brazil, and India charge much higher tariffs on the US than what US charges them, calling this situation unfair.
“India charges us 100 per cent tariffs, the system is not fair to the US, it never was. On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them. If they use non-monetary tariffs to keep us out of their market, then we will use non-monetary barriers to keep them out of our market,” Trump stated.
He further said that the US would generate trillions of dollars and create an unprecedented number of jobs. “We’ve been ripped off for decades by every country on earth, and we will not let that happen any longer,” the US President said in his speech on Tuesday.
In his address, Trump made it pretty clear that the countries who do not make their products in US will have to pay tariffs, and in some cases, a large one.
