Thailand launched airstrikes against Cambodia on Monday as part of what it deems to be a retaliatory attack after a Thai solider was killed and two others were injured. Merely two months after US President Donald Trump brokered a peace agreement between the two countries, both of them accused each other of breaking the ceasefire. The latest reports of the violent clash emerged from the disputed border area Thailand shares with Cambodia.
Thailand-Cambodia conflict: What both countries are saying?
The Thai army said that Cambodia initiated an attack on Thai border at around 3 am local time on Monday. On the other hand, the Cambodia army issued its own statement, accusing the Thai military of launching “an attack on the Cambodian forces” at around 5:04 am local time.
“The target was at Cambodia’s arms supporting positions in the area of Chong An Ma Pass, because those targets had used artilleries and mortar launchers to attack the Thai side at Anupong Base, resulting in one soldier killed and two soldiers injured,” Thai Major General Winthai Suvaree said, as per the CNN.
Meanwhile, Cambodia officials added, “It should be noted that this attack occurred after the Thai forces engaged in numerous provocative actions for many days.”
The renewed clashes between the two nations has left the months-long calm following a ceasefire agreement, which was agreed on July 28, in shambles. American President Donald Trump had engaged in discussions with both countries’ leader, which made way for Cambodia and Thailand to sign an expanded ceasefire agreement in Kuala Lumpur in late October.
The ceasefire, in turn, came after five-day-long violence on the border in July. Dozens of people were killed, while 200,000 on both sides were displaced.
