The death toll from a Sudanese military plane crash in Omdurman has risen to at least 46, officials confirmed on Wednesday (February 26). The Khartoum Media Office reported that 10 others were injured in the accident.
The Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday while attempting to take off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, located north of Omdurman, Sudan’s military informed. The crash also caused damage to several houses in the Karrari district of the city.
While the military previously confirmed casualties among both armed forces personnel and civilians, it did not specify numbers or the cause of the crash. Some of the victims’ bodies were transferred to Nau Hospital in Omdurman, according to the health ministry.

Sudan has been gripped by civil war since 2023 when clashes between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated into full-scale conflict. The ongoing war has devastated urban areas and has been marked by severe human rights abuses, including mass rapes and ethnically driven killings, which the United Nations and international rights organisations have classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in Darfur.
In recent months, the Sudanese military has gained ground against the RSF in Khartoum and other regions. Meanwhile, the RSF, which holds control over most of Darfur, claimed responsibility for downing a military aircraft on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province.
