In a major diplomatic development, President Droupadi Murmu is all set to start her official visit to Malawi, Algeria, and Mauritania from 13 October to 19 October 2024. For the first time, a head of Indian state will be paying a visit to these three African nations intending to deepen bilateral ties with the African continent.

India’s bilateral ties with Algeria

President Murmu is scheduled to commence her tour of Algeria from 13 October to 15 October. She has been invited by the President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. During her stay, the President will engage in bilateral talks with her counterpart and the discussion will boost collaboration in the fields of defense, space, oil, and gas. She will also be meeting important leaders like the President of the National People’s Assembly and the President of the Council of the Nation. Murmu is also scheduled to deliver a speech at the India-Algeria Economic Forum and the Sidi Abdellah Science Technology Pole University. She will also inaugurate the India Corner at Hamma Garden.

Murmu’s diplomatic trip to Malawi and Mauritania

On her official tour, President Murmu’s next stoppage will be to Mauritania, a nation that is currently heading the African Union. To strengthen the bilateral relationships, she will also be holding talks with the President of Mauritania HE Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Murmu will also be interacting with the Indian community in Mauritania to reinforce India’s growing presence in Africa.

The last phase of the trip will happen to be in Malawi from 17 October to 19 October. President Murmu has been invited by the President of Malawi, HE Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera. The agenda of the meeting will be high-level talks with Malawian leaders, discussions with key players from industry and trade, and visits to heritage landmarks. This visit is anticipated to bolster friendship between India and Malawi with a special focus on education, culture, and trade.

This state visit will also mark India’s strategic vision to enhance its ties with African nations, concerning the African Union’s recent permanent membership in the G20, which was facilitated by India’s presidency.
