Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, during which he shared his insights from his recent trip to Ukraine. Modi reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to advocating for a swift, enduring, and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The conversation focused on ways to enhance the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. PM Modi took to X and said that both leaders exchanged views on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Prime Minister emphasized on India’s steadfast commitment to supporting a prompt, lasting, and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
US President Joe Biden had also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “message of peace” and “humanitarian aid” to Ukraine during their phone call on Monday. This conversation, initiated by Biden, followed Modi’s significant visit to Kyiv three days prior. During the visit, Modi urged President Zelenskyy for a dialogue between Ukraine and Russia to end the conflict and offered India’s support in actively working towards peace.
Biden took to X and wrote, “I spoke with Prime Minister Modi to discuss his recent trip to Poland and Ukraine, and commended him for his message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine.” “We also affirmed our commitment to working together to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” Biden said.
This was the first conversation between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi following Modi’s recent trip to Russia, Poland, and Ukraine, as well as the recent political events in Bangladesh. The White House’s summary of the call did not mention Bangladesh, although Prime Minister Modi addressed it in a post on X. Modi’s nearly nine-hour visit to Ukraine—marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991—occurred six weeks after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which had caused concern in some Western capitals.
