To probe the rigging allegations made by Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has established a high-level committee, reported Pakistan-based Dawn.

The ECP has taken this step after Chatta on Saturday resigned from his post in protest against poll irregularities, particularly rigging, reported The News International.

On Saturday, in a press release, the ECP said the high-level committee will have senior election commission officials, including the secretary, special secretary, and additional director general law.

The Election Commission of Pakistan informed that the committee will record the statements of returning officers and district returning officers. Within three days, it will submit a report to the commission.

At Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the Rawalpindi Commissioner held a press conference in which he tendered his resignation. He said that he had done injustice to the people of Rawalpindi Division.

He admitted that “rigging” took place in Rawalpindi Division and took responsibility for it.

With a 50,000 votes margin, “we converted the losers into winners,” he claimed and surrendered himself before the cops.

“I apologize to the returning officers of my division,” he said, and added that his subordinates were screaming about what they were directed to do.
