A tsunami advisory was issued for Iwate Prefecture after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast on Sunday evening, The Japan Times reported. The country’s meteorological agency warned that waves of up to 1 metre could reach parts of the Iwate coastline. The earthquake, recorded at 5.03 pm, produced shaking equivalent to shindo 4 (Japanese seismic scale) in Morioka city and the town of Yahaba.

According to a Reuters’ report, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK has asked residents to stay away from coastal areas. A tsunami was observed 70 km (45 miles) off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at 5.12 pm (1.42 pm Indian time) and was expected to reach the Pacific coastline soon, NHK said.
