The Israeli military on Monday (April 1) withdrew its troops from Gaza’s largest hospital after raiding al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for two weeks. According to the reports, the troops left behind several bodies and a vast swath of destruction.

Israel’s military had a raid on the hospital premises with tanks and heavy gunfire on March 18, resulting in deaths and injuries.

“The scene was a total destruction,” explains Mohammed Mahdi, who was among those who returned. Mahdi added that several buildings had been burned down. He is believed to have kept a track of about six bodies in the area, including two in the hospital courtyard.

How it all started

The war began on October 7, when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 people hostage. Israel responded with an air, land and sea offensive that has killed over 32,000 Palestinians, displaced most the territory’s population and driven a third of its residents to the brink of famine.
