In Gaza, the Palestinian death toll from the war between Israel and Hamas has soared past 25,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Sunday. The war has been going on for three months.
In the last 24 hours, at least 178 bodies were brought to Gaza’s hospitals along with nearly 300 injured people, said Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra. In the Israel-Hamas war, women and children are the main victims, according to the United Nations (UN).
The war started after Hamas surprisingly attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. In the attack, Palestinian militants murdered some 1,200 people. Most of them were civilians. They also took around 250 hostages, including men, women and kids.
Israel immediately responded. For three weeks, it focused on the air campaign. After that, a ground invasion into northern Gaza took place. Now, ground operations are focused on the southern city of Khan Younis.
Nearly 85 per cent of the population of Gaza fled their homes. UN-run shelters and tent camps are packed with refugees.
Health Ministry of Gaza said a total of 25,105 Palestinians have been killed, and another 62,681 have been injured. Many casualties remain buried under the rubble from Israeli strikes, said Al-Qidra.
The army of Israel said it has killed around 9,000 militants, without providing evidence. Since the start of the Gaza offensive, the military says 195 of its soldiers have been killed.
