India-Canada Row: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Canada has communicated all relevant information regarding allegations of Indian officials’ involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar to its Five Eyes partners, especially the United States. This statement follows India’s recent expulsion of six Canadian diplomats, escalating an already strained diplomatic relationship. Trudeau’s press conference was convened in response to India’s swift actions, which included calling back its high commissioner and other “targeted” officials after strongly denying Canada’s allegations linking the Indian envoy to the investigation into the murder of Sikh extremist.
Allegations of Uncooperative Behavior
Trudeau lamented that India has chosen to respond with denial and personal attacks rather than cooperation. He accused the Indian government of making a “monumental mistake” by allegedly employing diplomats to threaten Canadians, calling the actions “unacceptable.” Referencing comments from the RCMP Commissioner, Trudeau stated that there is “clear and compelling evidence” indicating that Indian agents have engaged in activities posing significant threats to public safety. He reiterated that attempts to collaborate with Indian law enforcement have been repeatedly refused.
Trudeau emphasized the importance of collaboration among allies, stating, “We will continue to work with our allies as we stand up together for the rule of law.” Describing the situation as “extremely undesirable,” Trudeau expressed a desire to avoid violence against Canadians and to preserve positive relations with India. He mentioned efforts made to resolve the issue diplomatically, stating, “We approached the Government of India through our security agencies and diplomats to find a way to protect Canadians without damaging our relations.”
US Response remains Unclear
While the US State Department has yet to comment on the escalating diplomatic crisis, Trudeau highlighted the close coordination with US officials regarding similar patterns of behavior from India. The Prime Minister expressed concern over the implications for Canadian citizens and the relationship between the two nations.
India’s Stance on Canadian allegations
The MEA criticized Trudeau’s administration, citing his past actions as indicative of a long-standing hostility towards India. In light of the allegations and ongoing tensions, India has ordered Canadian diplomats to leave the country by October 19. This latest development underscores the deepening rift between Canada and India, as both nations navigate the complex landscape of international relations amidst serious accusations.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement indicating that it reserves the right to take further action in response to what it perceives as Trudeau’s support for extremism and violence against India.
