Donald Trump recently announced a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, starting at midnight on Tuesday, along with an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Critics argue that Trump’s tariff plan will hinder global growth and raise prices for US consumers. However, the US President defends the move, saying the tariffs are necessary to address issues like immigration, drug trafficking, and to boost US industries.
Trump said that America might face some difficulties but people understand that. “But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world,” he added.
Here’s how the world reacted to Trump’s tariff imposition:
- In response to Trump’s tariff, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced similar 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods. The Canadian PM took to X on Sunday and wrote, “Now is the time to chose products made right here in Canada,” Trudeau said on Sunday on X. “Check the labels. Let’s do our part. Wherever we can, choose Canada,” he added. Trudeau on late Saturday said that they are not looking to escalate the matter but they will “stand up for Canada.”
- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed her economy minister to introduce both tariff and non-tariff measures, which are expected to include 25% tariffs on American imports.
- China’s commerce ministry stated that it would take the US to the World Trade Organization and file a lawsuit over what it calls “wrongful practice” and would implement countermeasures to safeguard its own interests.
- In Europe, French Industry Minister Marc Ferracci emphasised the need for a response to the proposed US tariffs, while Italy’s Finance Minister Adolfo Urso warned against triggering a “devastating trade war.”
- The European Union issued a stern warning to Trump, vowing to take strong action if he proceeds with imposing tariffs on EU goods. This development reflects growing global frustration with his trade policies. The warning came after Trump confirmed on Friday his plan to impose tariffs on imports from the EU, in addition to those already set for Canada, Mexico, and China.
Trump’s orders for tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China are explained as actions to fight illegal immigration and drug smuggling. However, not everyone agrees with this justification. US government reports show that unauthorised border crossings from Mexico have decreased in the past year, and fentanyl seizures along the northern border are relatively low.
Claims About Mexico and Drug Cartels
Trump’s order regarding Mexico claims that drug traffickers and the Mexican government have an “intolerable alliance” that threatens US national security. He states that this relationship must be broken to eliminate the influence of dangerous cartels.
Canada’s Role and Fentanyl Concerns
The order on Canada claims that Mexican cartels are operating there as well. Even though the amount of fentanyl intercepted is relatively low, Trump argues that it could still be enough to kill “9.5 million Americans.”
China Alleged Opioid Situation
Trump’s order on China accuses the Chinese government of providing a “safe haven” for criminal groups to launder money made from illegal synthetic opioids.
Trump’s General Support for Tariffs
While these are the legal reasons given for the tariffs, Trump has also expressed strong support for tariffs in general. He believes they will make the US wealthier, even though they may lead to higher prices for consumers and businesses as they are passed along in the form of taxes.
