Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption by a Pakistani court on Wednesday, prison officials have said. This comes at the heels of Khan being convicted for leaking state secrets, which has landed him a 10-year prison sentence.
What are the accusations against Imran Khan and his wife?
Imran Khan and his wife have been accused of retaining and selling state gifts when Khan was in power. The former PM has also been barred from holding any public office ahead of the February 8 parliamentary elections in Pakistan.
This latest blow to the couple comes three weeks after both of them were indicted on graft charges for retaining state gifts, including jewellery and watches from the Saudi Arabia government. The couple had pleaded not guilty earlier when the charges were read out at a court at Rawalpindi’s prison earlier this month. Khan briefly attended the court hearing when the judge announced the verdict.
