US President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his intention to visit China after taking office, aiming to strengthen ties with Beijing, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, Trump has also discussed with his advisors the possibility of a trip to India as part of his broader diplomatic agenda.
Trump warned to impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports during his campaign, a statement that strained US-China relations. However, Trump in his recent discussions appeared to focus on improving ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The US President-elect has told his advisors that an official trip to Beijing can smoothen the collaboration between the two nations.
He also had a telephonic conversation with Xi, where topics like TikTok, trade, fentanyl, and other important issues were discussed. Trump termed the conversation as ‘’very good’’ highlighting their common desire to work towards global peace and safety.
The report also outlined that the Vice President will be representing China at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. This will be a rare case for a senior Chinese official to be present at a US presidential inauguration. Despite receiving Trump’s invitation, Xi refused to attend the event as he usually avoids such events.
Trump India’s visit and QUAD Summit
Trump is also planning to visit India, with preliminary discussions taking place during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s trip to Washington. The timing of this expected visit could match with India hosting the QUAD Summit, which will comprise leaders from the United States, Australia, and Japan.
As per PTI sources, the visit may take place in April or later in the fall. There is also a possibility that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be invited to the White House this spring for a meeting.
As Trump prepares to assume office, these proposed visits will focus on reshaping US foreign policy.
