The United States has elected Donald Trump as its 47th President, sparking widespread  concerns among Americans and immigrants alike about what life will look like under his leadership.

As per a Reuters report citing Google, after the US exit polls began pointing towards a second presidency for Donald Trump, many Americans started searching for new countries to move to.

According to company data, Google searches for “move to Canada” surged by 1,270% within 24 hours after polls closed in the US East Coast on Tuesday. Searches about moving to New Zealand spiked nearly 2,000%, while those for Australia rose by 820%. By late Wednesday evening, emigration-related searches for all three countries had reached record highs, a Google official reported.

What is worrying Americans about Trump?

Many Americans are also concerned that Trump’s presidency could deepen divisions between Democrats and Republicans on issues like race, gender, education, and reproductive rights.

As per the Reuters report, several immigration lawyers are also receiving queries.

“Every half hour there is a new email enquiry,” Evan Green, managing partner at Canada’s oldest immigration law firm, Green and Spiegel, said.

“Trump is obviously the impetus, but it’s also societal. The majority of Americans voted for him and some people don’t necessarily feel comfortable living in that kind of society anymore. People are afraid they are going to lose freedoms,” Green added.
