UK influencer Brittany Miller is attracting quite the attention on TikTok for all the wrong reasons. The woman from Oxfordshire has fessed up to being at the centre of a severely controversial unravelling after being hit with allegations that she faked her cancer diagnosis in 2017. Years after troubling “scam” slipped under the radar, the 29-year-old finally came under fire a few days ago after a bombshell report appeared to confirm the life-changing accusations.

Why is Brittany Miller in the news?

In an explosive article published on November 4, The Sun accused Miller of having capitalised on her fake cancer claims years ago. The report, titled “How online scammer Brittany Miller faked cancer to become top influencer as we reveal dark truth behind career,” went on to lift the lid on the shocking scam. It alleged that Brittany was just 21 years old when she sowed the seeds of the now-debunked lies.

Seeking fame on the Internet as a young social media influencer, she left the SNS community heartbroken after claims of her so-called Stage 3 gastric cancer diagnosis became public. Ultimately, many pitched in to support her financially, as a crowdfunding page was set up by those around her.

Mentions of the lie that became her brand in 2017 soon vanished from the face of the virtual world. Come 2020, she is said to have made waves over her collaboration with a breast cancer awareness charity, according to The Sun.

Influencer’s former pals lift the lid

Around the same time, Miller’s former best friend decided to speak out about her lies. Anonymously coming forward, her ex-pal said, “Brittany lied to us all – not just her friends but also her followers online. Now people are following her and they have no idea what she is really like.”

They further asserted that even though the cancer scam happened years ago, many of Miller’s followers barely know about her hidden truth. “Lots of her followers will have family members living with cancer but little do they know that every time they watch one of her videos, they are giving money to a fraud,” the person added.

Yet another friend suggested that Brittany told her in the past that she was in the hospital, seeking treatment like radiotherapy. The person reportedly event accused the TikToker of stealing her grandmother’s money. The Sun has since cited messages it reviewed, indicating that Brittany admittedly blamed it all on strong medication’s side effects.

“Brittany has done what she can to erase her history and will delete any comments referencing it,” the individual told the international outlet. “It’s pretty scary to think she was happy to lie about cancer and makes you wonder just how far she will go to be super successful.”

The person further insisted that no vengeful intentions had powered their decision to finally speak out. “It’s about people knowing the truth, which they deserve,” they claimed.

Police confirms UK influencer’s criminal conviction

Authorities have since confirmed to the UK news outlet that the Oxfordshire influencer was actually convicted of “fraud by false representation.” Despite it all, her previously associated criminal record never came up under searches tied to Miller’s name.

Nonetheless, the report detailed that the influencer was given a conditional charge for 12 months and was compelled to pay compensation and costs to the Crown Prosecution Service in July 2020.

Brittany Miller apologises for fake cancer controversy

In light of the scandal finally coming to light, the TikTok star was left with no choice but to address the issue at hand. Attributing her lies at the time to a mental health crisis, Brittany admitted that she laid out fake cancer diagnosis claims when she was depressed and suicidal.

The now-controversial TikTok figure further claimed that she had lost both her job and her partner at the time. And so, Miller decided to mount up lies about having cancer. Once she told someone in her circle, a friend, who believed her, started a fundraiser (‘Just Giving’) to help her. Consequently, the UK influencer found out that some people had even made donations to the false cause, prompting her to put an end to it.

The regretful 29-year-old pleaded her case, saying that she never used the money that poured into the fundraiser back then. It remains unclear how much funds were raised through the ‘Just Giving’ page.
