A viral social media post is shedding light on the cost of ongoing tech layoffs, as one user revealed how their entire family, all employed in the tech industry, lost their jobs within a span of five months.

“I was laid off in March. My dad in May. My mom just lost her job today,” the post reads. “We all worked in tech, not in high-income FAANG roles, but in middle-class salary companies.”

Having recently moved back in with their parents to cut expenses, the user ended the post with a stark sense of uncertainty: “I don’t even know what happens now.”

Tech layoffs in 2025

July 2025 has emerged as the worst month for tech layoffs in recent years, with over 24,500 employees losing their jobs across 26 companies. From Microsoft to Intel, several industry giants announced sweeping job cuts, citing organisational restructuring and a push for leaner teams. While the growing use of artificial intelligence tools has been partially blamed, most firms attributed the layoffs to internal realignments.

The month kicked off with Microsoft revealing plans to cut nearly 4% of its global workforce, impacting employees across various roles and regions. Within weeks, Intel followed suit, announcing layoffs of over 5,000 staff across four US states.

Netizens react..

A user wrote, “Watching my parents go through job losses made me promised myself to do everything I could to never be beholden to an employer. I saved and invested at least 25% of income as soon as I could. It got up to 60% at times. I also decided I wasn’t ever going to stretch myself for a mortgage. It was easier back in the 2000s than now admittedly to get a decent mortgage. It buys peace of mind knowing you can financially handle a job lost.”

Another added, ” I got layoff today , I was working as voice engineer and I noticed this market behavior since last year but now is being more and more layoffs. One thing that I have noticed as well is that my job position is now in India.”

A third wrote, “Most tech jobs moving to India, except leadership roles.” “Need a tech job that can’t be outsourced overseas – like technology that the government deems too important it has to be done here in the US. Only way it’s saved many jobs in aerospace,” claimed another.

A user suggested, “apply unemployment benefits. if health and dental insurance still good till end of the month, book them now and see if you can squeeze the appointment in the last week of the month.cut unnecessary expenses that you don’t need.get your resume ready and apply for jobs.work uber eats / doordash delivery for fast money if need. they have walker mode and good luck.”
