A video of Bajrang Dal member Jyoti Sharma threatening two Catholic nuns from Kerala on camera is all over social media platforms. On Twitter (now X), people have been slamming Sharma for openly issuing threats to nuns, on camera, with her team on her side.

An account that claims to track “anti-Christian incidents” shared the video with a part of the caption reading, “Is this democracy or mobocracy?”

‘Muh tod dungi’

The video opens to show Sharma asking a man, “Kya samajh hai? Bologe? Ya lagaun? [Do you understand? Will you speak? Or should I make you?]” as she gestures a punch in his face.

As the video goes on, she turns to one of the nuns from Kerala, and says, “Bol na? Nahin to mai muh tod dungi. Mai bata deti hun [Speak up! Or else I’ll break your face. I’m warning you].”

The video then transitions to show her telling the same man not to teach her law in the presence of GRP.

Sharma then gives a byte to local media, claiming she saw a Bible, a passbook, a photo, an ATM card and a diary which has the names of pastors. She went on to link the pastors’ contact numbers found in the diary to allegations that the nuns are involved in human trafficking and forced conversions.

Protest in Parliament

The United Democratic Front (UDF) staged a protest outside the Parliament today over the “arrest and harassment of nuns” from Kerala in Chhattisgarh with placards in their hands.

One of the placards read, “Stop attacks on minorities,” while another said that the “government’s silence is violence”. A third urged the government to “arrest the goons, not the nuns”. “India for all, not for the few,” read a fourth.

Social media is furious

Sabeer Bhatia, who built Hotmail before selling it to Microsoft, said that the video is “disturbing” and that “people should reject this ideology”.

“Just saw a disturbing video of Jyoti Sharma (Bajrang Dal) threatening to break the jaw of nuns in Chhattisgarh. This isn’t Hinduism – it’s hate in the name of religion. Reject this toxic ideology. Share widely. Silence is complicity,” he wrote on X.

Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, said that the two nuns were not only “illegally detained” but were “harassed and humiliated” by Sharma. He asked if this is what “sabka sath, sabka vikas” stands for.

“Nuns who have sacrificed their lives for humanity are accused of flesh trade, and both the sisters had been sent to Jail in Chhattisgarh state,” said a third.

Some even said that the incident is “extremely unfortunate”.

Nuns held for human trafficking

According to a report by The New Indian Express, three, including two nuns, were arrested in Chhattisgarh by the GRP for alleged human trafficking. The two nuns – Preeti Marry and Vandana Francis – and the man Sukhman Mandavi have been sent to a 14-day judicial custody. They have been booked under Section 143 of the BNS. The three of them were accompanying three young women when Bajrang Dal activists spotted them at the station.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has rejected the claims, saying that nuns had written consent letters from the parents of the girls, who are over 18 years of age.
