A recent matrimonial advertisement has left social media confused with its unusual wording. The ad, which was published in a newspaper, read, “Mumbai-based business family with Rs 500 crore+ market cap seeking a suitable Marwari/Gujarati boy for their daughter’s (28 yrs) marriage.”

As opposed to the typical matrimonial ad that typically stresses individual details such as age, height, educational background, and job, this one took the nonconformist route by stressing the family’s economic situation. The “market cap” reference, one applied in business circles to express the total worth of a company’s shares, put people into confusion and into fits of laughter.

The wording in the ad caused confusion and invited humorous reactions online. There were speculations among some users that the family may have attempted to flaunt their wealth, but others wondered whether the advertisement was genuine or not.

Most social media users were confused by the ad. One of them posted, “I never believed in these ads. Families with a Rs 500+ crore net worth tend to have close-knit elite groups. They don’t need to advertise in this manner.”

Another remarked, “Bro, people with Rs 500+ crore net worth don’t put matrimonial ads in Rs 5 papers. They have marriage agents for this stuff. Rs 500 crore relationships don’t go in Rs 5 newspapers—this is definitely a scam.”

Some joked about the business-like tone of the ad, with one user quipping, “Is this a business merger or a marriage proposal?” Another added, “If you have that much market cap, why don’t you list on the BSE instead of advertising in the paper?”

A user noted that “market cap” is the sum value of a company, but that doesn’t have to equate to the family’s individual wealth. “Market cap is not net worth. Their business could be loss making while still having a huge market cap.”

Some users even dismissed this as a scam. “I mean it’s common sense you don’t need to be an intellectual to understand that this is scam advert,” they wrote.

In spite of all this, the ad has undoubtedly stirred debate, with individuals on social media questioning its legitimacy and purpose.
