A new video featuring former IPL chairman Lalit Modi celebrating with fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya in London has sparked widespread criticism on social media. In the clip, Lalit Modi introduces himself and Mallya as “the two fugitives, the biggest fugitives of India,” drawing sharp reactions online.

He captioned the post on Instagram, “Let’s break the internet down in India again. Happy birthday my friend #VijayMallya. Love u.” The video comes amid ongoing calls for their extradition to India.

Extradition and Past Legal Troubles

India has been seeking the extradition of both men for years. Lalit Modi left India in 2010 following allegations of financial irregularities tied to the IPL, while Vijay Mallya fled in March 2016 after Kingfisher Airlines collapsed and mounting legal cases surfaced.

Lalit Modi, who played a pivotal role in creating the Indian Premier League, was removed as IPL chairman in 2010 after facing accusations of bid rigging, money laundering, and financial misconduct. The Enforcement Directorate alleged that Modi had manipulated IPL broadcast rights in 2009 in exchange for kickbacks.

Lavish Celebrations and Social Media Backlash

Earlier this month, Lalit Modi hosted a grand pre-70th birthday celebration for Mallya at his London residence, sharing photos and videos online. He described the event as an “amazing celebration,” referring to Mallya as the “King of Goodtimes” and highlighting that friends and family had flown in from across the globe.

Photographer Jim Rydell, who covered the event, thanked Lalit Modi for hosting a “fabulous” party. Modi also posted acknowledgments on social media, calling Mallya his friend.

Vijay Mallya’s Fugitive Status

Vijay Mallya was declared a Fugitive Economic Offender in January 2019 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. He faces accusations of fraud and money laundering linked to bank loans exceeding Rs 9,000 crore and continues to fight his extradition from the United Kingdom.

The video has reignited public debate over both men, highlighting how their luxurious overseas lifestyles clash with ongoing legal proceedings and calls for accountability in India.
