A savings account in the name of a deceased woman at Kotak Mahindra Bank has stunned everyone after a balance appeared that’s so massive, it could take an entire day just to count the digits. Yes, you read that right. A 37-digit amount was suddenly reflected in the account of Gayatri Devi.
37-digit amount in bank account
Gayatri Devi passed away two months ago, and since then, her 20-year-old son, Deepak alias Deepu, has been operating the account, per a report by News18.
Deepak said he received a notification on his mobile alerting him of the transaction. When he opened the bank’s app to check, he was in for a shock. The account did show a very large number, so large and unusual that even AI tools couldn’t make sense of it.
He took a screenshot of the bank account and shared it with his friends, asking them to help count the zeroes and figure out how much money had actually been credited.
The screenshot of the account has since gone viral on social media. It says, “Available balance Rs 10,01,35,60,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,23,56,00,00,00,00,299.”
How did the matter come to light?
Deepak visited his local Kotak Mahindra Bank branch to verify the transaction. Bank officials were stunned upon seeing the amount and immediately froze the account, alerting the Income Tax Department to investigate further.
Authorities are now probing the case as a potential technical glitch, but are also considering it a possible money laundering case due to the suspicious nature of the transaction.
‘Zero balance in account’: Deepak
Deepak showed the 37-digit amount that he was able to see on the app to the reporter, but said that the bank officials said that the balance in the account is zero.
“I received money in my account, and it was later frozen,” Deepak told Republic Bharat.
He added, “When the bank staff checked the account, they told me that the account has zero balance.”
Kotak Mahindra Bank denies balance
Despite the man showing the unusually large sum received in his account on video, Kotak Mahindra Bank has denied the incident.
The bank has rubbished the media reports on the 37-digit amount in a statement to HT.
“Media reports suggesting an unusually large balance in a customer’s account are incorrect,” it said.
The bank added, “In light of these reports, we encourage customers to check their account details using Kotak’s mobile banking app or net banking platforms.”
The statement further noted that the bank’s systems are functioning normally.
‘20YO is richer than Ambani’: Social media
Some people on social media couldn’t believe their eyes. Some said that such a large amount is due to a possible technical glitch, while others invoked humour in it.
“Not possible. It is just an error in the bank’s software or a manual entry mistake,” said one social media user.
Another added, “If I got a message, I would immediately do online shopping.”
“My math is a bit weak. The rest of you can do the multiplication and division,” commented a third.
A fourth said, “20YO is richer than Ambani.”
