Wayne Rooney has recently spoken up to clarify his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, saying that he “loves” the Portuguese star.

However, his comments have created doubts among fans, with many wondering if his words are as genuine as they seem.

Rooney and Ronaldo were teammates at Manchester United for several years, winning major titles together. The duo who played together had a strong rivalry in the earlier times.

While Ronaldo was all about personal glory and individual records, Rooney was focused on team success.

In a recent interview on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Rooney explained that despite their differences, he holds a deep respect for Ronaldo’s dedication. “I love Cristiano,” he said, addressing years of rumours about a potential rift between them.

“People misunderstood some things, but I have nothing but respect for what he’s achieved.”

Ronaldo has a “selfish mentality,” says Rooney

Rooney also talked about Ronaldo’s “selfish mentality”, which he believes was key to his success. Ronaldo has earned five Ballon d’Ors and countless records. While Rooney admires this drive, he also pointed out that it’s not a mentality he shared.

“Cristiano wanted everything, individual awards, team success. I didn’t have that,” he said. For some, though, the use of “selfish” left a bad taste, making it sound like there might still be some unresolved tension between the two.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo is still a top scorer for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, proving that his mentality, focused on constant self-improvement and breaking records, has served him well throughout his career.

‘This is not true’

Netizens posted their comments across social media. A user noted, “Rio has been trying so hard to bring a word (Ronaldo better) from Rooney’s mouth but Rooney stays on his word as like the past!. Rooney obviously loves Ronaldo as a former teammate but he will forever say boldly that Messi is the better footballer, Messi is on another level and Messi is the greatest!.”

Another added, “We all saw the things u did and said about him. It’s not about you preferring Messi, it’s about the way you spoke badly about Ronaldo with jealousy and envy.”

“He loves him on camera but we all know,” added a user. “he still doesn’t like him, he is only afraid to say it,” noted a netizen.

“He respects Ronaldo but prefer Messi style of play. Simple!,” stated a user.
