Virat Kohli’s return to the Ranji Trophy after 13 years has sparked immense fan enthusiasm leading to a major security lapse at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground. On the third day of Delhi’s match against Railways, three fans managed to breach security protocol and entered the field, escaping more than 20 guards in their attempt to get a closer look of the cricketing icon.
Entering the pitch is not an uncommon incident in international matches but such passion for a first-class game is rare. The match, which would have been played in front of an empty stand, witnessed an unusual surge in attendance only because of the presence of Kohli. Thousands of fans gathered to watch their hero in action, turning the domestic match into a high-profile event.
Despite a high level of security presence, three fans evaded the guards and stormed the field. The situation was quickly handled by the security and they ensured that no harm was done. However, the incident raised concerns regarding safety arrangements at domestic cricket venues.
Delhi off-spinner Shivam Sharma accepted the immense admiration for Kohli but highlighted the risks, stating, ‘’It should not have happened. Someone could have carried dangerous.’’ Kohli on the other hand directed the security to handle the situation calmly, stating, ‘’Kisi ko maarna mat’’. (Don’t beat anyone up).
The DDCA (Delhi and Districts Cricket Association) has closed the Bishan Bedi Stand after fans crowded the dressing room grill dangerously close. Those who were hoping to see Kohli bat again left disheartened as Delhi’s innings victory did not allow him a second chance at the crease.
Kohli will now rejoin Team India for the ODI series against England which is slated to begin from February 6 followed by the Champions Trophy from February 19. His participation in the Ranji Trophy followed by a BCCI directive mandating international players to play domestic cricket when available.
