US Open 2025 Day 9 Highlights: Venus Williams sent out a heartwarming message for her sister Serena Williams after reaching the US Open women’s doubles quarter finals with partner Leylah Fernandez. She said she now wants Serena to come and watch her play. Williams and Fernandez beat the 12th-seeded team of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. After the win, Venus called on her younger sister to cheer for her in person.

“She’s so happy for Leylah and I, and she’s given us advice,” Williams said. “We just need her in the box. So, my message is, Serena, you need to show up,” she added.

This is the first time that Venus has reached a Grand Slam doubles quarter final since the year 2016. The seven-time Grand Slam singles winner returned to the tour in late July at the Washington Open after a 16-month break. Following her singles loss earlier at the US Open, she hinted that this might be her last tournament of the season.

Jannik Sinner decimates Alexander Bublik

Meanwhile, world number one tennis player Jannik Sinner cruised into the US Open quarter finals on Tuesday with a stupendous victory over Alexander Bublik. The win came hours after the Kazakh player had called the defending champion an “artificial intelligence” player.

Sinner stepped onto the court chasing his 25th straight Grand Slam win on hard courts. He showed no signs of trouble against Alexander Bublik, racing through the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in just 81 minutes during his first night-session appearance of this US Open.

Sinner needed only one hour and 21 minutes to defeat 23rd seed Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. What’s noteworthy here is that this is the second-fastest win in the men’s singles draw this year. The victory stretched his unbeaten run at Grand Slams to 25 matches and showcased why the man is still the top contender in New York.

Sinner broke Bublik’s serve twice to lead 4-0 before his opponent could win a game. He closed out the first set with another break, finishing it off in style by chasing down a drop shot and firing a backhand winner.

Bublik tried to slow Sinner’s momentum with more drop shots, but the tactic failed. Errors on his own serve made things worse, leaving him two sets down. From there, Sinner powered ahead to book his place in an eighth straight Grand Slam quarter final.

‘Night matches a bit different because there’s a bit more attention,’ says Sinner

Sinner described the evening matches as a “special” and “different” experience. He said these matches bring extra attention, a louder atmosphere, and a different energy compared to the daytime games. “It was the first time for me this year. It was nice. You have the good and the bad if you play in the evening. It’s very special and you feel very privileged to step onto court in the night on the biggest court we have,” he said.
