US gymnast Jordan Chiles has been stripped of the Bronze medal she won in the women’s floor final on Monday and Romania’s Ana Barbosu has been upgraded to the third position. This has been decided after a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Previously, the Romanian Olympic Committee argued that the US team’s inquiry regarding Chiles’ score was submitted beyond the one-minute limit for such appeals and should be dismissed. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) agreed and upheld the appeal.
Chiles’ original score has been reinstated, moving her back to fifth place.
Post the ruling, the USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee said they were “devastated”, further condemning the “consistent, utterly baseless and extremely hurtful attacks” hurled at Chiles on social media.
What happened during the final?
Initially, Chiles scored 13.666 in the final, taking the fifth place and Barbosu scored 13.7, enough to secure her the third place.
After an inquiry by Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, concerning her difficulty rating, officials revised Chiles’ score to 13.766, elevating her to third place.
Post this, the Romanian Olympic Committee successfully appealed to CAS, arguing that the inquiry was “untimely” because it was submitted four seconds past the one-minute time limit.
The International Olympic Committee announced it will reallocate the bronze medal to Barbosu and is coordinating with the US team for the medal’s return and with the Romanian Olympic Committee to arrange the reallocation ceremony.
In the final event, Chiles’ team-mate Simone Biles won the silver medal, while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade claimed the gold.
