Wheelchair basketball competition at the Paralympic Games 2024 kicked off on August 29. Running from August 29 to September 8, the highly anticipated tournament will take place at the Bercy Arena, centrally located in Paris.
Sixteen teams, divided equally between men’s and women’s national squads, will battle for the coveted Paralympic medals. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments commenced on August 29, just a day after the Opening Ceremony.
The inaugural match saw Great Britain’s men face off against Germany in Group A. The women’s competition began later in the evening with Great Britain taking on Spain in Group A. Great Britain emerged victorious in both men’s and women’s inaugural matches.
The group stage will run until September 2, followed by the knockout rounds starting on September 3. Teams will initially compete in a round-robin format within their groups, progressing to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and ultimately, the finals. The men’s final is scheduled for September 7 and the women’s final is set for September 8.
Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Groups
Group A features Great Britain, China, Canada, and Spain, promising a thrilling series of matches. Group B, which includes reigning World and Paralympic champions the Netherlands, alongside Japan, USA and Germany, is expected to be equally competitive, showcasing the diverse strengths of each team.
Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Groups
In the men’s competition, Group A is dominated by European powerhouses. Host nation France will compete alongside reigning European champions Great Britain, Germany and Canada. This group is expected to deliver fiercely contested matches of exceptional quality.
Group B features defending champions USA, who will be up against top contenders Spain, the Netherlands and Australia, making it another group to watch closely as the tournament unfolds.
