Nitesh Kumar on Monday clinched his first Paralympic gold in the men’s singles SL3 badminton final, defeating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in a gripping match. The 29-year-old from Haryana showcased remarkable defense and precise shot-making to secure a 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 victory in an intense contest lasting over an hour.
Nitesh, who lost his left leg in a train accident at age 15, has since channeled his resilience into para badminton. His win ensures India retains the SL3 gold, following Pramod Bhagat’s triumph in Tokyo three years ago. Competing in the SL3 class, where players have severe lower limb disabilities, Nitesh’s victory is a testament to his determination and skill.
The 29-year-old Nitesh, who overcame permanent leg injuries from a 2009 accident, showcased his dominance with a thrilling win over Bethell in the final.
An IIT Mandi graduate, Nitesh ensured India’s continued success in the SL3 category, following Pramod Bhagat’s gold when para badminton made its debut three years ago in Tokyo.
