It was a special night for Lionel Messi as thousands of fans packed the stadium to honor one of the greatest players in football history. The crowd’s warm welcome even brought Messi to tears during the warm-up. But once the match began, he switched straight into game mode. Showing his trademark brilliance, Messi scored twice for Argentina and helped them with a comfortable 3-0 victory, in what was his final World Cup qualifier on home soil, although he hasn’t revealed yet when he plans to retire.
Argentina, already qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America, dominated from the start. Early chances from Nicolas Tagliafico and youngster Franco Mastantuono were stopped by Venezuela’s goalkeeper Rafael Romo. Messi finally broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, finishing off a quick counter-attack from Julian Alvarez.
Argentina vs Venezuela – As it happened
In the second half, Argentina kept pressing. The second goal came in the 76th minute when Nico Gonzalez crossed from the left and Lautaro Martinez scored with a diving header. Just four minutes later, Messi added his second of the night, finishing a move set up by Thiago Almada.
Argentina remain on top of the South American qualifying table with 38 points and will play Ecuador in their final group match on Tuesday. Venezuela, still in contention, will host Colombia next.
An emotional game for Messi
Before the match at Estadio Monumental, Messi spoke about how emotional the game would be. He said it was a special moment since it was his last World Cup qualifier at home, and that his entire family would be there to share it with him. He made these remarks after the Leagues Cup final with Inter Miami.
