India at Paris Olympics Game 2024: Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu expressed her disappointment after finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics. Despite a commendable effort, Chanu narrowly missed out on a medal, securing fourth place with a combined total of 199kg.
In a video shared by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Chanu reflected on her performance, stating, “I tried my best to win a medal for the country but I missed it today. It is a part of the game; we all sometimes win and sometimes lose. Next time, I will work harder to win a medal for the country. I will try my best and will deliver my best performance in the next game.”
Chanu’s Commitment to Future Success
Chanu’s fourth-place finish in Paris mirrors her previous close call, as she once again missed out on a podium spot by a narrow margin. In the competition, weightlifters were required to perform two key lifts: the snatch, where the barbell is lifted above the head in one motion, and the clean-and-jerk, where the barbell is first lifted to the chest and then extended above the head with a straight elbow while holding the position until a buzzer sounds.
China’s Hou Zhihui claimed gold with a combined total of 206kg, while Romania’s Mihaela Valentina Cambei secured silver with 205kg. Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao won bronze with 200kg.
India has so far earned three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, all in shooting. Chanu’s performance, although just short of a medal, continues to highlight her dedication and potential in weightlifting. As she sets her sights on future competitions, her determination to improve and succeed remains steadfast.
