Gujarat Titans’ aspirations of making it to the Indian Premier League playoffs were shattered as their crucial match against Kolkata Knight Riders was called off due to rain, without a single ball being bowled on Monday.

Consequently, KKR secured a top-two finish with 19 points from 13 matches, earning a spot in Qualifier 1. Meanwhile, GT, last year’s runners-up and 2022 champions, are officially out of playoff contention, accumulating only 11 points from 13 games.

The toss, scheduled for 7 pm, was delayed due to persistent lightning, followed by a light drizzle that intensified over time. Despite setting a cutoff time of 10:56 PM for a potential five-over contest, officials abandoned the match due to worsening rain and a waterlogged outfield, marking a first in this IPL season.

“It is a significant accomplishment for us. The pre-match discussion focused on maintaining our momentum and approaching the game with the right mindset. GG (Gautam Gambhir) has been instrumental in shaping our team’s strategy. He emphasised the importance of seeking two points regardless of the circumstances,” remarked Kolkata’s opener Phil Salt during the rain delay.

Having already secured their playoff berth after defeating Mumbai Indians in the previous fixture, KKR continued their impressive campaign.

In the current standings, Rajasthan Royals rank second with 16 points from 12 matches, followed by defending champions Chennai Super Kings in third place with 14 points from 13 games. Sunrisers Hyderabad holds fourth place with 14 points from 12 matches, while Royal Challengers Bangalore sits fifth with 12 points from 13 games.

Lucknow Super Giants, with 12 points from 12 matches, remain in contention for a playoff spot, while Delhi Capitals are virtually eliminated from contention with 12 points from 13 matches.
