Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is one step closer to clinching his second straight French Open title after a dramatic semi-final win over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti on Friday. The Spanish star overcame a shaky start to emerge victorious in a match that ended with Musetti retiring early in the fourth set.
The semi-final began with Musetti seizing early control, winning the first set 6-4. However, Alcaraz bounced back in the second set, edging out the Italian in a tightly contested tiebreak 7-6. With momentum swinging his way, Alcaraz dominated the third set, taking it 6-0 as Musetti struggled physically.
Though the Italian tried to rally in the fourth, playing two games, he ultimately retired while trailing 0-2, citing discomfort. This handed Alcaraz a walkover win and a direct entry into the final.
Alcaraz will now get a day’s rest before returning to Court Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday, June 8, for the men’s singles final. He will face the winner of the much-anticipated semi-final clash between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and tennis star Novak Djokovic.
Meanwhile, the women’s singles final between Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff is set for Saturday, June 7.
