Indian wrestling legend Mahavir Phogat has reacted to his niece Vinesh Phogat’s retirement announcement, following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. He shared that her decision to retire was understandable given the disappointment of not being able to compete for the gold medal after her disqualification in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final. Mahavir hopes to persuade her to return to wrestling and aim for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics once she’s back home.
Vinesh had made it to the gold medal match by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals but was disqualified for being over the weight limit. Speaking to ANI, Mahavir said that they were confident she could win the gold, so this disqualification was a tough blow. He said that it is natural for her to be upset, but when she’s home, the family will talk to her about coming back for the 2028 Olympics.
Mahavir also praised Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for planning to welcome Vinesh back with the same honors and rewards given to Olympic silver medalists. He believes this gesture will inspire other young athletes. “The Chief Minister’s support shows that Vinesh’s achievements are valued, and it will motivate others facing similar challenges,” Mahavir added.
In a statement, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed his admiration for Vinesh’s performance and promised she would be celebrated with the respect and rewards due to a medalist. Saini said that Vinesh has shown incredible skill and dedication. Even though she didn’t get to compete in the final, she’s a champion in their eyes.
Mahavir also committed to continuing his coaching career and encouraged the families of other promising wrestlers, like Anshu, Antim Panghal, Reetika Hooda, and Nisha Dahiya, to prepare them for the 2028 Olympics.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha also expressed her disappointment over Vinesh’s disqualification but reassured that support staff is helping her manage her weight. “We’re doing everything we can to support her,” Usha said.
Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to award her the silver medal. The CAS decision is anticipated soon. Despite this setback, Vinesh’s career remains impressive, with two World Championship bronzes, an Asian Games gold, three Commonwealth Games golds, and various other medals.
