In a recent discussion on the ‘LiSTNR Sport’ podcast, Alyssa Healy, captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, sparked debate by ranking Virat Kohli fourth in her list of the Fab Four modern-era cricketers. Healy’s surprising choice places Kohli behind Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson in her evaluation.

Healy’s Analytical Approach to Ranking

Healy’s ranking reflects her analytical approach, focusing on statistical performance amidst the vast amount of cricket played by these players. Despite acknowledging Kohli’s remarkable achievements and his status as the leading white-ball batsman, Healy argues that his Test performance has not matched his earlier heights. Kohli, once the top Test batsman, has seen a decline over the past few years, falling behind Root, who currently leads in Test runs and hundreds.

Healy’s number one spot goes to former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. She praises Williamson for his solitary contributions to New Zealand’s cricket success, contrasting it with Kohli’s support from a strong Indian team including Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja. Healy emphasizes that Williamson’s solo performances have been crucial for New Zealand’s achievements, suggesting that the team’s success is heavily reliant on his batting.

“Williamson has carried the whole New Zealand team,” Healy noted. “Whereas, for Virat, it’s like someone else is always there. Rohit Sharma can score hundreds, KL Rahul can score a 100, even Ravindra Jadeja can score a 100 at No. 8. Kohli always has support, but if Williamson doesn’t make those runs, New Zealand doesn’t get anywhere near winning.”

As Kohli prepares for India’s upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19, the debate over his place among the modern greats continues. Despite Healy’s ranking, Kohli remains a pivotal figure in international cricket, with his career still showcasing exceptional performances.
