In his interaction with FinancialExpress.com, Shri Oken Tayeng talked about his travel company, Abor Country Travel & Expeditions, which lays a huge emphasis on the outdoors and adventure tourism. Activities offered include rafting and trekking, which give great exposure to nature and the outdoors.

Shri Tayeng got into tourism over a decade ago when he started helping the American government repatriate the human remains and personal effects of American pilots who had crashed in the jungles of Arunachal Pradesh while flying into Kunming in China during World War Two over a treacherous section of the Himalaya called ‘The Hump’. He has also opened a museum centred around this in Pasighat recently which honours these brave American pilots. Over 700 planes crashed in the area during that period, he informed.

He also delved into some interesting stories about these planes. All of the planes had interesting names. One of them was called ‘Hot As Hell’ and was piloted by a Jewish American pilot. The whereabouts of the plane were unknown for 60-70 years. Shri Tayeng helped the pilot’s nephew locate the crash site and they found some personal effects, etc, in what must have been an emotionally fulfilling moment.

The theme of the Adventure Tourism Meet was very close to his heart, Shri Tayeng said, and he was happy to be here. He praised the event for being very vibrant and focussed. The presence of a lot of young tourism students, who are the future of tourism, in the audience was deeply heartening, he said, because the Meet would serve as a masterclass for them. Shri Tayeng also said that he was happy to share his thoughts and insights with them.
