As expected, Vivo has launched the world’s first smartphone featuring an in-display fingerprint sensor at an event on Wednesday in Beijing, China. Dubbed Vivo X20 Plus UD, the smartphone has made a breakthrough in the device unlocking technology, where Samsung and Apple are still trailing. The in-display fingerprint technology was demoed by Vivo at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018, alongside the announcement that it will be mass-produced for consumers. The Vivo X20 Plus UD comes in Black (golden frame) colour option and will be available in China starting February 1 at a price of 3,598 yuan (roughly Rs 36,000).
The Vivo X20 Plus houses the Synaptics Clear ID 9500 in-display fingerprint sensing technology that omits the presence of any physical fingerprint sensors on the phone. The smartphone was originally launched last year in September without the in-display fingerprint sensor. After unveiling the new fingerprint technology at CES, Vivo was speculated to launch the Vivo X20 Plus UD with the first in-display fingerprint sensor. Interestingly, according to the invite sent by Vivo recently, it was speculated that the smartphone will be called Vivo X20 Plus and not Vivo X20 Plus UD, however, the Chinese company stuck to the former.
The specifications of the Vivo X20 Plus UD are similar to the original variant. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is a dual SIM smartphone that runs on Android 7.1 Nougat. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, wherein four cores are clocked at 2.2GHz and other four cores are clocked at 1.8GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage, that can be further expanded via microSD card (up to 256GB). The smartphone packs a 6.43-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The display, as we mentioned, has a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath. Vivo claims that it can unlock the device in few milliseconds, even with a screen guard up to 1.5mm thick layers.
Moreover, the Vivo X20 Plus UD comes with a rear dual camera setup – a 12-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. On the front, the smartphone has the 12-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture that comes with the face unlock functionality as well. The smartphone packs a 3900mAh battery under the hood. The connectivity options on the Vivo X20 Plus UD include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Micro-USB, OTG, and a 3.5mm audio jack among others. The Vivo X20 Plus UD measures 165.2×80.02×7.35mm and weighs 183.1 grams.
