The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is planning to launch Annual Survey on Services to get data of the services industry, much along the lines of Annual Survey of Industries, a member of the Standing Committee on Statistics told FE. “We are using the GST (goods and services tax) database to select the sample for conducting the survey. The timeline for the launch is yet to be decided,” the member said.
The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), which covers all factories registered under the Factories Act across the country, is considered as an important source of industrial statistics of the registered organised manufacturing sector of the economy. The survey results for 2020-21 are expected to be released soon.
“A very large of proportion of services is in the informal sector, the only way to get data of that sector is through surveys, because large and organised services entities data is available with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the unorganised ones data is not available,” the member said.
Services sectors constitutes over 50% of the share in the GDP. Broadly, data of trade, hotels, transportation, communication, financial , real estate, public administration and defence is captured in the GDP data.
