Demand for energy has surged by 3.2 % so far this fiscal while capacity addition lags the targeted figure by about 1.5 %. Lack of availability

of constant and good quality power supply continues to be a thorn in the side for industries, even as Prime Minister Modi promotes ‘Make in India’ across the world.
1. The shortage is most acute in the North-East with an over 15 % power deficit last month, followed by around 8 per cent deficit in the South.
2. According to World Bank estimates, almost 7 % of annual sales of Indian firms is lost as a result of electrical outage, as compared to only 3 % across the world.
3. About 32 % of firms identify electricity as a major constraint in India, with 41 % owning or sharing a generator
4. According to a Ficci survey in 2012, the costs incurred to mitigate the impact of power outages range from around Rs 1,000 to more than
Rs 40,000 a day for each firm.
